Round Lake Centre – On Monday around 1:15 p.m. emergency crews received a call that someone had gone out on Round Lake in the area of the Sherwood River and that the person who was driving a side by side UTV was missing. It was assumed that the person went through the ice. A police report early Tuesday morning confirms that an 80 year old man from Killaloe, Hagarty and Richards township went out on the ice and his UTV went through the ice and sank to the bottom.
The Valley Gazette received a call from someone later on in the day at approximately 4 p.m. saying that the individual that had gone through the ice still had not been found.
The Valley Gazette drove down to Round Lake Centre near the area where the person was said to have went into the lake. Upon arrival the Gazette observed from a distance that people were out on the ice and it looked like a number of emergency responders had a whole lot of gear with them and also had a floatable rescue sled with them. It has been confirmed that the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit were engaged in the recovery operations.
A number people standing on shore just down from were the incident occurred said they knew the missing person and that their sources said that the UTV had been located in about twenty five feet of water mid afternoon and that the missing person had not been located as of 5:45 p.m. Police have confirmed that the missing person was located at approximately 6:00 p.m.. As of press time the investigation is being conducted in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner. It is believed that the person died by drowning and foul play is not suspected. The name of the drowning victim has not been released as of press time.
