Wilno’s ‘Roman the rower’ wins silver at Provincials

WILNO – Although he has only been on Trent University’s rowing team for only 10 months, a young man from Wilno has won a silver medal at the provincial competitions.

Roman Zakrzewski was born in Markdale, Ontario to parents Wendy and Chris. When he was two years old, he moved with his family to Wilno, where he remained until fall 2014 when he moved to attend University.

Zakrzewski graduated from Madawaska Valley District High School in 2013. He has just completed his first year studying forensic science (honours degree) at Trent University.

Although Wilno was void of rowing opportunities, Zakrzewski knew he wanted to make the university’s team. He had watched the sport on television during the Olympics and had a friend who was a rower that motivated him to take the leap.

“I just loved it,” he said. “The ability to use every muscle in your body to row; you know by the end of the race that you are as tired as you can be.”
