Firefighters from the Ministry of Natural Resources set up a command post and campsite near the fire in Wilno.
UPDATE 8/28 11:30 a.m.: MNR has updated the status of the Wilno fire to “inactive.” The fire is extinguished.
UPDATE 8/27 2:25 p.m.: MNR has updated the status of the fire to “under control.” The next time we update the status will be when MNR notes it as extinguished and changes status from ‘active’ to ‘inactive.’
UPDATE 8/27 10 a.m.: MNR has confirmed to the Gazette the status of the wildland fire in Wilno remains as “being held.” Evan Lizotte, fire information officer, said in an email that there is no timeline for clearing the scene or upgrading the status to “under control.” He also indicated the cause remains, “under investigation.”
What is the difference between a fire “being held” and “under control?” MNR provided the following:
Being held: “A wildland fire that indicates, with committed resources, sufficient suppresion action has been taken so the fire is not likely to spread beyond existent or predetermined control boundaries under prevailing or forecasted conditions.”
Under control: “A wildland fire that has received sufficient suppression action to ensure no further spread of the fire.”
UPDATE 8/26 5 p.m.: The MNR has confirmed to the Gazette that the fire status is “being held.”
UPDATE 8/26 4:30 p.m.: The Ontario Wildfire Map is showing the status as “being held.”
UPDATE 8/26, 12 p.m.: MVFD fire chief informed us that he has been advised the fire is no longer spreading. “Fire should be contained late this afteroon,” he wrote.
UPDATE 8/26: From MVFD fire chief Corwin Quade – fire remains out of control and is spreading. There is no threat to buildings or the public and no reason to evacuate. Three MNR fire crews are on scene. From MNR: the fire is 1.9 ha (4.7 acres) in size. Helicopter water drops were used.
UPDATE: Firefighters from the Ministry of Natural Resources are on scene. They had to be dropped in by helicopter. Unsure of status of water bomber.
BREAKING: Wildfire in north Wilno on Crown land between Cranberry Creek Road & Murak Flis Road.
Last known to be approx. 1 acre in size. MNR has dispatched water bomber. Recon helicopter was onsite assessing fire around 2 p.m.
MVFD responded and cleared the scene about 2:45 p.m. when MNR took over control.
