Wilno rink up and running

WILNO – Although the winter season is half over, volunteers have been able to get the Wilno outdoor rink operational.

On February 3, members of the Wilno Rink Corporation met for their first official meeting, where they discussed upcoming events and other business.

The group managed to save the rink late 2013 after Madawaska Valley Township council refused the offer from the previous owner. With the help of solicitor Bob Howe, the volunteer group became a corporation and the rink officially transferred hands just in time for the new year.

Several people make up the board, which is composed of a president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. Jennifer Kuiack, Amanda Kutchkoskie, Sylvia Hinrichsen, Joanne Plebon and Rob and Constance Bersan are all members.

In January, the Bersan family approached both Madawaska Valley Township and Killaloe-Hagarty-Richards Township with a donation request.

The rink is physically located in MV, but is used by many KHR residents. In late January, KHR announced it would be donating $10,000 to the corporation for operating and capital expenses at the rink.
