PALMER RAPIDS – Months of planning, organizing and gathering donations came together Saturday in Palmer Rapids. A group of local concerned residents put on a day-long festival to raise funds for the eight-year-old Quadeville girl who was attacked last spring (the Gazette is not able to use her name under a court-ordered publication ban).
A youth baseball game, adult slow pitch tournament, live music, a dinner and dance gave the large number of attendees plenty to do throughout the day, from morning well into the night. About 100 raffle prize baskets contained a wide variety of donated items.
The group effort raised more than $118,000 which will be placed in trust for the girl’s future needs, be those therapy, medical attention, to pay for post-secondary education or other needs she may have. Amber Jessup from the organizing committee wrote that they expect more to come in over the next few days. More than 300 people, businesses and community organizations contributed to the effort.
Jessup wrote, in a Facebook post that, while there are some expenses for the event that need to be paid, no one on the organizing committee will be paid. They all volunteered their time. She anticipates the legal work to establish the trust will be completed in the coming few weeks. The trust will be managed by three community members in accordance with the terms of the trust.
