Student athletes recognized at annual athletic banquet

BARRY’S BAY – A crowd gathered in the school cafeteria on June 12 at Madawaska Valley District High School for the Annual extra-curricular awards banquet. Athletes of the Year Awards were presented to those athletes who had the most points in their Junior or Senior Division, but also outstanding athletic achievement in more than one sport. Junior winners were Aidan Cruchet and Kirsten Recoskie and Senior winners were Skyler Glofcheskie and Emma Klawitter. Grade 12 student Ryan Luckovitch took home top honours for the prestigious Larry Reynolds award, named for a Grade 11 student athlete in 1967 who passed away in an accident in 1980. The award recognizes the all-round student athlete who embraces MVDHS character, a mixture of highly respected skills and reasonable academics, and who values athletics in more ways than participation. Ryan Luckovitch was also the winner of the Ambassador Award, which recognizes athletic achievement outside of the school athletic program. The award was decided based on an application process, and Luckovitch was acknowledged for his dedication mentoring younger children in Archery. Grade 12 student Brittany Yantha received the Wilmer Mathew’s Award, for her enthusiasm, organization of activities and good role modeling for younger students. The Mark Medland Award is based on criteria including positive competitive team play, sportsmanship, energy and commitment to team goal. The Junior Boys’ Volleyball Team won this award. The Outstanding Athletic Achievement Ted Wren Award identifies outstanding accomplishments in one sport in a school athletic program. Grade 12 student Laura Yantha was announced as winner for her stellar efforts and results in cross-country running. To read the full story, pick up a copy of the June 20 paper.
