Retiring volunteers say farewell to Hastings Highlands council

MAYNOOTH – They have spent countless hours advancing the economic development of Hastings Highlands for free. But, Carol and Hugh Russell are hanging up their volunteer hats to finally enjoy their retirements.

On December 3, the Russells attended the regular council meeting in Maynooth, and were acknowledged for their time volunteering with the municipality.

CAO Pat Pilgrim, who will also be retiring at the end of the month, said the Russells are “huge champions” of the area. She began with recognizing the efforts of Carol Russell.

“She has been our champion in terms of economic development in Hastings Highlands. I can list the projects that she has been involved with that I am aware of,” Pilgrim said. “She was the chairperson in 2015 with the Maynooth and Hastings Highlands Business Association, and at that time, [focused] on membership and directory listings. She was also instrumental in the business retention and expansion survey in 2016.”

Carol also was involved in the first impressions community exchange program in May. She and Hugh presided over the tourism brainstorming session, and Carol was instrumental in getting the hamlet banners for downtown Maynooth.
