Barry’s Bay – This year’s flower and vegetable show, organized by the Madawaska Valley Gardening Club was held at the Legion in Barry’s Bay again this year. The August 23 competition was free to enter for all club members. Participants dropped off their entries early Saturday morning before judging at 10 AM. The public could then view the flowers from 1 until 3.
Club president, Maryjka Mychajlowycz, said that even though the summer heat left many gardeners struggling, many members were still able to participate and put on a great show. In total, 29 participants entered the competition, placing 220 entries in various categories. In an email message sent out to the club, club member Ritsuko Honda wrote, “Congratulations all who brought in your exhibits.”
Throughout the year, people are encouraged to participate in monthly competitions. These monthly contests help people learn more about the judging process used by the Ontario Horticultural Association (OHA). The Madawaska Valley Gardening Club (also known as the Madawaska Valley Horticultural Society) is a member of district 2 of the OHA and follows judging guidelines set out by the OHA. While participation is encouraged for its educational and skill building benefits, winning a few ribbons at the show also brought smiles to many faces.
While many prizes were taking home in various categories, the “best in class” results were sent out by Honda and are as follows:
