There’s something special about coming together in a small town, where families gather and laughter rings through the halls, especially when it also means helping our community. The second annual Born and Raised Show will be bringing that spirit to life this October, all in support of local healthcare.
The event made its debut last fall to a sold-out crowd, and on the heels of that success, event organizer Marie Finnerty is hoping to make it an annual tradition.
“Over the years, I’ve been blown away by the talent we have in the area. Last year, when I was thinking of an idea to showcase that talent, I was also thinking about how we could support local healthcare,” Marie shared.
Combining the two ideas, she wanted to organize something unique and engaging. “I’ve always loved dinner theatre-style events, and we used to have variety shows at the high school many years ago – I really missed that kind of community entertainment.”
Judging by the positive feedback from last year’s sold-out show, the idea was a hit. “The best part for me, honestly, was watching people’s faces in the audience, especially those who don’t get out often. All the laughter and chatter afterward was so much fun. Seeing the performers enjoy their craft and share their talents with their hometown community was truly heartwarming. It was a huge success.”
This year’s second act will take place on Saturday, October 25th at 7pm (doors open at 6:30) at the Barry’s Bay Legion, and Marie says the lineup is sure to entertain again. The Salt Cellars, who recently released their new single Be Kind will be among the featured performers.
“We’re also thrilled to have Andrea Murray back for a second year. She’ll be performing and sharing the role of emcee. Andrea may be a renowned comedian performing all over the Toronto area, but her heart still belongs to her hometown. Last year she had us all in stitches with her witty, relatable humour and clever antics – she’s just so good!”
In all, Marie says there will be seven amazing acts, including Barry’s Bay’s own Lisa Hildebrandt, Brendan Cybulskie from Round Lake, Two for the Road, Geoff Webber, and Combermere’s Tim Baklinski.
New this year is a silent auction, organized by Rosanne Hudder, who says there will be a wide array of items that have been generously donated and sure to appeal to everyone. “We have great prizes that have been generously donated — including a quilt from Quilter’s Curve, tickets to a Blue Rodeo concert, a pontoon Boat cruise, scratch tickets, and so much more,” said Rosanne.
Marie emphasized that attendees will be getting great value for their $60 ticket. “Everyone will be treated to delicious appetizers from Andrea Budarick, as well as her yummy signature donuts. Combined with the entertainment, and most importantly, the cause, it’s a bargain!”
Proceeds will support local healthcare, including St. Francis Memorial Hospital (which is currently enhancing its Emergency Department), as well as Madawaska Valley Hospice and Valley Manor. “Supporting local healthcare is so important. And since all proceeds go directly to these organizations, it’s truly a win-win for everyone.”
Marie also noted how many people have come together to make the event possible. “The Legion is donating the venue, Andrea is donating the food, so many local businesses have donated prizes for the silent auction, and all of the performers have donated their time and talent. We are so grateful to every one of them for their generosity and shared commitment to strengthening our local healthcare.”
