Exciting Summer Lineup for Kids
This summer, the Madawaska Valley Public Library (MVPL) is turning up the fun with a lineup of free activities that are sure to entertain, educate, and spark young imaginations. From outdoor storytimes to global explorations, the library’s children’s programming offers something for every curious mind and creative spirit.
Librarian Natalie Barrington says summer programs have long been a tradition at the library. “We’ve made it a priority to offer activities for kids every summer for many, many years — and they’ve always been popular. It gives parents and grandparents something fun to do with the kids. Our traffic triples in the summer with cottagers and visitors, and we’re often told how much people appreciate that we offer something like this.”
With events happening every week and a full slate of activities for various age groups, MVPL is certainly the place for kids looking to explore, create, and connect.
Natalie says the library takes advantage of many resources available through the TD Summer Reading Club, a national program designed to encourage children to read over the summer months.
This year’s TD theme is “Around the World,” which inspired MVPL to host weekly information and craft sessions that focus on different countries such as Poland, France, and Sweden. Community members who are originally from these countries generously volunteer their time to speak with children about their heritage. The first session featured Martina McLaughlin from County Tipperary, Ireland.
Natalie notes that this program takes place every Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. and is geared to school-aged children (approximately age 6 and up). Registration is required to attend.
She also shared details on several other exciting programs and events:
Stories in the Park – Tuesday mornings at Zurakowski Park starting at 10:30 a.m. Join in for songs and stories, suitable for ages 2–6. No registration required.
Self-Guided Story Walk – Follow storyboards featuring a tale about a young boy who dreams of owning a skateboard. The story walk is outside the library during open hours and will also be featured at Zurakowski Park on Tuesdays.
Stuffie Sleepover – On Friday, July 18, kids are invited to drop off their favourite stuffed animal for a library sleepover. When picked up the next day, they’ll receive a goodie bag and a collage of photos showing what their stuffies got up to overnight.
BIAK (Bonnechere Inodewiziwin Abinodjinish Kikinamagan) will visit the library to present EarlyON programming featuring drumming, songs, stories, and a take-home activity. All ages welcome. Sessions take place on July 23 at 1:30 p.m. and August 13 at 10:30 a.m. and registration is required.
Be a Librarian – Children aged 7 and up can learn how the library works and try their hand at checking books in and out, shelving, and sorting during a half-hour hands-on session. Registration required.
Lego Car Derby – Build a car using LEGO (provided) and race it at the library. This fun event takes place on August 15 at 1:30 p.m. Registration is required as space is limited.
Teen Nights – On July 10 and August 7, teens can explore coding and tech skills for things like building games and websites. There will also be an Art Night on July 31 and a Games Night on August 21. All teen activities begin at 6 p.m.
Natalie also noted that special contests like the Colouring Contest and Candy Guess Jar will run throughout the summer, with prizes awarded in both July and August.
For the kids living in the Brudenell, Lyndoch, Raglan area, MVPL will be at the Palmer Rapids Recreation Centre on July 17 at 10:30 a.m. for stories, crafts, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) activities, and again on August 7 at 1:30 p.m. for a LEGO challenge.
In addition to their programs, Natalie says that the library also offers free resources to borrow, including museum passes, fishing tackle, puzzles, and a wide selection of DVDs.
She encourages children to pick up a Summer Reading Passport to track the books they’ve read over the summer. Passports and more information about this initiative are available at the library.
She mentioned that a popular program at the library for everyone is their ongoing book sale. Visit the downstairs area where there are hundreds of books, including children’s books, for sale by cash or e-transfer donation. You can also fill a grocery bag with books for only $10.
Whether you’re a local family or visiting for the summer, the Madawaska Valley Public Library is the perfect place to learn something new and enjoy some creative fun. Be sure to drop in, meet the keen staff, and enjoy the summer adventures!
