The Spring to Life maple sap is runs in the hills

ROCKINGHAM – There is a new generation of farmers moving up to the hills around Rockingham to start a new life.

Among the recent arrivals are Alex and Raene (pronounced Rain) Davies.

Raene was born a half an hour from the little town of Lumby in British Columbia, in the Okanagan Valley.

“We didn’t have running water or electricity […] we’ve always collected our own firewood and hauled water.”

Raene’s parents painted houses for a living. “They would go into Vernon, about an hour drive, everyday. Just commute.”

At Raene’s high school in Lumby there were 400 students.

“I moved out when I was 16 with a boyfriend and got a job making sushi somewhere. I did that for four years.”

Just after that she met Alex around a campfire at a party in the middle of the night.

“He had with him some maple syrup, and I appreciated the nice maple syrup. I thought that was pretty neat.”
