PIKWAKANAGAN – While Ontario Minister of Indigenous Affairs and Reconciliation, David Zimmer, has often spoken with Chief Kirby Whiteduck, it was his first visit to Pikwakanagan.
At a reception on Friday, Zimmer informed the invited guests which included members of council and senior department staff, that the provincial government was aware of the cooperation between the County of Renfrew and the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation.
Specifically, the minister referred to the historic 2015 memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the two parties.
The memorandum, though creating no legally binding obligations, outlines key areas of common interest — infrastructure, economic development, training, business opportunities, and skills development.
In a statement by the County of Renfrew, this united position on issues of common interest allow the parties to work to the betterment of both Renfrew County and the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation.
