PALMER RAPIDS – It was a bittersweet day at Gulick Forest Products on the afternoon of June 1. Although everyone at the mill had gathered for a hearty barbecue and some laughs, it was the last time staff would be working with edgerman Glenn Quade. Quade, who just turned 65 on the May long weekend, is officially retiring from the career that he has held for more than 30-plus years. He was raised in downtown Quadeville, and still lives in the homestead that he grew up in with his 13 siblings and parents John and Cathy Quade. “Home was always Quadeville,” he said. Quade worked at AE Quade mill in Quadeville, owned and operated by his uncle. When his uncle passed, Quade briefly worked at Pastway Planing mill in Combermere before returning to AE. Around 1986, the mill was purchased by Gulick Forest Products. “He came part and parcel of the deal,” Office Administrator Darlene Coulas laughed. “We’ve actually had a lot of guys that started here with the purchase of AE Quade and they worked here for a lifetime and retired.” Glen Gulick was in charge when the company purchased AE. Although he has known Quade for many years just by living in the community, Glen got to know Quade as not only an employee, but also a friend. “He is an excellent, excellent fellow,” Glen said. “He was always here.
