The first puck for the Grizzlies dropped on Friday at 6:30p.m. versus Carleton Place Kings. The Grizzlies took an early lead scoring 37 seconds into the game. The Kings tied the game 20 seconds into the third period. Just 40 seconds later, the Grizzlies scored again, to regain the lead. The Grizzlies scored two more goals to win their first game of the tournament 4-1.
The Grizzlies second game was Saturday morning at 11a.m. versus. the South Stormont Selects. The Grizzlies ended up winning the game 6-3. The last game of round robin play was at 3p.m. against Cassleman Vikings. The Grizzlies came out on top with a 5-1 win, which meant they took first place in their pool. The quarterfinal game was Saturday night versus Kanata Vipers. The Grizzlies handed the Vipers a 9-0 loss, which advanced them to the semi-finals on Sunday morning against the Westend Thunder Pucks. With a score of 7-1 the Grizzlies came out victorious to head to the A division finals. In the finals the Grizzlies had a rematch against the Carleton Place Kings. The game was closely matched. The Grizzlies took a one-goal lead with 3:02 left in the first period. The second period remained scoreless until there were four seconds left of the clock, when the Kings scored their first goal, to tie the game at 1-1.
After a very intense third period, with many scoring chances from both teams, the goalies made many brilliant saves to keep the score tied, 1-1 at the end of regulation time. There was a five minute overtime period that consisted of 3 on 3 hockey. Just 39 seconds into overtime, the Grizzlies managed to squeak one past the Kings’ goalie, and were crowned the champions. With amazing team work, attitudes and determination, the Grizzlies worked together, and fought hard, to bring home the gold medal.
