Taxi company seeking licence in MV Township

BARRY’S BAY – A taxi company from Bancroft is looking to set up shop in Madawaska Valley Township.

Don Martin, owner and operator of Don’s Taxi, brought the request to the Madawaska Valley Township council at the regular meeting on May 4. He was looking for consent from council to make an application for the licence.

According to Martin, his taxi company has been serving Bancroft since 2011. It provides delivery service and transportation for customers.

Martin presented his credentials to council and said he would be looking to hire locals if the licence is approved.

“I have to hire people that know the area,” he said.
Drivers would also require a criminal background check and a good driver’s abstract. He is looking to licence two vehicles and operate the service 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“I am going to play that by ear and see what the demand is and maybe only one will be running, but I am going to licence two of them,” he said.
Martin explained that the taxi service is licensed by the province to deliver alcohol. Customers must be of legal drinking age and present proper ID upon delivery, Martin clarified.

“It keeps people from drinking and driving,” he added.

The service will benefit seniors particularly, as the drivers can also deliver from pharmacies and grocery stores as well.
