Orphaned patients encouraged to register with Health Care Connect

BARRY’S BAY – It has been seven months since Dr. Alex Atfield became the newest family physician at the St. Francis Health Centre in Barry’s Bay.
In less than a year, he has managed to accommodate almost all of the local orphaned patients registered with Health Care Connect, a provincial wait list that connects people with a local family physician.

“I’m really glad we were able to help out,” Dr. Atfield said. “Most people have been waiting for a long time, but it also makes me wonder how many people just don’t know that if they need help, it’s available.”

After a patient registers with Health Care Connect, a nurse, called a care connector, helps to find a health care provider in the patient’s area. Once a match has been identified, a physician is notified and a letter is sent out to the individual.
