One sweet strawberry social

BARRY’S BAY – Strawberries took centre stage at the annual social on June 18.

That evening, the Opeongo Seniors Centre was packed to capacity, with hungry patrons attending the Madawaska Valley Horticultural Society’s annual strawberry social.

Sharon Mahussier, the club’s president, has been donating fresh strawberries to the event for 12 years.  She was inspired to do so after she attended her very first strawberry social.

“They were using frozen strawberries,” Mahussier said.

Since then, she has been donating fresh berries and cream for the event, which seems to grow in attendance year after year.

Frances Mawson, a member of the society’s executive, said the club is grateful for the donations.

“Without it, the social would be back to using frozen strawberries,” Mawson explained.

Volunteers combine the fresh cut berries with shortbread and cream, to create a dazzling dessert for the senses.
