BARRY’S BAY – Madawaska Valley Township will not be making a financial donation to the Wilno Rink Corporation.
The decision was made at the February 5 recreation, heritage and economic development committee meeting.
In January, representatives from the newly formed Wilno Rink Corporation approached council, asking for $10,000 one-time donation to get liability insurance and help spruce up the rink and building.
Council was worried about the township’s liability if it made a donation and asked to get legal advice before any donation was made.
The lawyer suggested that if the township wanted to donate, there would need to be an established written agreement that would dictate the terms of the arrangement, including how the money would be spent. An indemnification clause in favour of the township would be included in the event something went wrong.
Meanwhile, as MV was getting legal advice, members of the Wilno Rink Corporation met with Killaloe-Hagarty-Richards Township representatives and asked for a similar donation.
