BARRY’S BAY – Council for the Township of Madawaska Valley came up with a possible new idea for a location for the Personal Support Worker (PSW) program, which has been discussed in past meetings.
For a refresher, councillor Elser Lee Faith Archer brought forward some information about a discussion she had with officials from Loyalist College. They had discussed the idea of holding a PSW course in the upper lounge of the Paul J. Yakabuski Community Centre (PJYCC). The course would last 58 days and the school would pay $5,800 for the use of the facility. This would be $100 per day, which is half of the rental rate for the use of the facility. After some discussion, council was going to look at the logistics of doing this.
During the regular council meeting on February 5, CAO Doug Robertson came back with some further information about the subject.
Robertson looked into the Fair Workplaces and Better Jobs Act to see if that would have any effect on overtime would be involved with the opening and closing of the facility. He also spoke with Raymond Mask, the operations manager of the PJYCC. Robertson said that Mask had some concerns with this.
“He typically works 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the summer hours, he recognized if council was willing to proceed with this he would be willing to work 8:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.,” said Robertson.
That would allow 15 minutes on either end of the day, which would allow him to open and lock the facility afterwards without incurring overtime.
