Barry’s Bay – On Friday, Sept. 23, 2022, over 250 Madawaska Valley District High School & Sherwood Public School students took part in what has become known as ‘The Marathon of Hope’ – the annual Terry Fox walk / run; all in the name of raising funds for cancer awareness and research.

The 5km route began at MVDHS and traced a path along Arena Rd, past the Paul J Yakabuski Community Centre to the rousing honks of cars and applause of passers-by as they crossed Opeongo Line.

“The fundraising is different for both schools. Madawaska Valley has been collecting change from anyone who goes into the school; students, staff and more with jars around the school. Sherwood has their own school cash online set up,” explained Madawaska Valley District High School student, Evan Nickerson. At time of publication the exact amount raised by the fundraiser had yet to be declared.

Terrance Stanley Fox was a Canadian athlete, humanitarian, cancer research activist and the youngest person to ever be named a Companion of the Order
of Canada.
