Kevin Lynch Memorial tournament marks 25 years

KILLALOE– Six teams came out to the 25th Kevin Lynch Memorial Men’s Hockey tournament at the outdoor rink in Killaloe on February 6.

Kevin Lynch died of a brain tumor 25 years ago. Killaloe-Hagarty-Richards Township Councillor Ted Browne said that the tournament gave people the opportunity to come together and remember. There are also trophies to remember Suzanne Cybulskie who died in 2007 and Chris Elie who died in 2010, likewise of a brain tumor.

Looking back over the 25 years the tournament has been running, Browne is likely the only person who is still playing who played in the first tournament.

With the freeze thaw of the 2016 winter, ice conditions were a problem on the outdoor rink. Derek Cybulskie, the tournament organizer, said that the ice was thin and patchy in places. Cybulskie said that these were not the worst conditions he has seen; as there was no ice at all in 2006. They played ball hockey that year.
