Joe Murray Memorial Golf Tournament gives to Wilno Rink

WILNO Brian McCarthy, one of the founding organizers of the Joe Murray Memorial Golf Tournament, returned to the Wilno Rink on Saturday with a gift.

Each year the golf tournament is approached by community organizations in need of help, McCarthy said. In the almost 40 years the tournament has been running, it has given well over $200,000 to local organizations, including St. Francis Memorial Hospital, hockey rinks around the area and the Community Resource Centre Toy Bus.

This year it was the turn of the Wilno Rink where the old building is being replaced.

When McCarthy was a youth, he visited the Wilno Rink to play hockey and broom ball. McCarthy said he still has friends from Wilno that he met at the rink.

The golf tournament was originally called the Killaloe Open, organized by McCarthy, Joe Murray and Phil Skebo. After the death of Joe Murray in 2010, the tournament was renamed. Each year almost two hundred golfers attend the Wolf Ridge Golf Course.
