Hassie celebration in the MVDHS library

BARRY’S BAY – The first official event of the Madawaska Valley Culture and Heritage Society (MVCHS) took place on June 30 at Madawaska Valley District High School (MVDHS). The event was a celebration of the art and music of the late Jim Haskins, Hassie as he was known. It was an opportunity for many people to gather and remember a person who had a very special part to play in the lives of many in the Valley. As the event’s program states, both Jim and his wife Loraine were at the heart of MVDHS while they both worked there. Jim directed many musicals and was active in other extra-curricula events inspiring generations of students and helping them to realize their potential. The couple was also active in many community initiatives. Jim and Loraine were founder members of the Kamaniskeg Area Property Owners Association, were at the forefront of the struggle to save both the Railway Station and its water tower, as well as being members of the Lions Club.
