KILLALOE – After losing its long-term tenant of 10 years, the Killaloe Friendship Club was concerned about its future in its current space. The club, housed at 12 Lake Street, started in 1974 as a gathering and meeting place for senior’s activities. A fire had destroyed their previous rental space and the club purchased the current building in Killaloe. In only four years, the mortgage was paid off. “A strong testament to the volunteer capacity and tenacity of active seniors,” President of the Killaloe and District Senior Citizens Friendship Club Lynne Postill said. As was the case on May 3, the Friendship Club is consistently teaming with members, who gather to enjoy each other’s company and events like the recent monthly lunch. But that’s not all that the club offers. It encourages active living and life-long learning for seniors and offers activities such as the walking club, exercise and yoga classes, information sessions, workshops and creative classes. They also provide space for the monthly foot care clinic and meeting space for various community organizations and events. Facility rental is available for small events for a nominal fee. Kathleen Turner, a relatively new member to the group, had retired from Madawaska Valley District High School at the end of the 2017 school year.
