BARRY’S BAY – Grade 12 student at Madawaska District High School, Ryan Luckovitch won his latest national gold medal in Amos, Quebec.
He was shooting in an outdoor archery competition in which contestants aim at
three-dimensional foam targets.
Luckovitch described the first day of competition in Amos, which took place during the August long weekend as miserable. “Twelve degrees and a downpour, lightning for six hours. We shot till 8 o’clock at night.”
While the organizers were pulling some competitors from the course, Luckovitch’s group were in the middle of the course so they had to continue shooting during the rain and lightening.
Firing arrows through the rain adds an extra level of complexity to outdoor competition, Luckovitch explained, “Most of the time it is going to push your arrow low.” At least being in thick bush meant that the wind was less of a factor than it has been in his previous national competitions in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
