Excitement in Eganville: First cheese box race launched

EGANVILLE – On a hot and humid Saturday, hundreds of people gathered along the banks of the Bonnechere River to witness the first annual Eganville cheese box race. The event was put on by the volunteers of the Eganville and Area Community Development Group (EACDG) as a fundraiser. As she judged the best decorated cheese box immediately before the race, Mayor Jennifer Murphy said of the event, “I thought it was going to be good, but I never realized how big it was going to be.” The cheese boxes came from the village’s former creamery and sold for $10 each. People then decorated them and brought them to registration on Saturday to race down the Bonnechere. They were loaded into a launch gate just below the dam. The race finish was at McRae Lookout Park just below the village. To read the full story, pick up a copy of the August 8 paper.
