Elementary kids triumphant at track and field games

KILLALOE – It was a winning day for students all across the Valley on June 7.

That day, Killaloe Public School hosted the annual MESAA track and field games. Students from eight local elementary schools took part in the tournament, competing in sports like the triple jump, shoot out, the 800 metre dash and more.
Prior to attending the games, students held similar track and field qualifying events at their home schools. Students who excelled at those games advanced to the MESAA finals.
On Thursday afternoon, there were plenty of winners throughout the day in various categories.
Starting with the midget girls, schools were well represented in the various races. Jessie Lea from Palmer Rapids came in first place in the 100 metre dash. Rachel Recoskie from Killaloe Public School won the 200 metre dash, as well as the 400 metre dash. Alyssa Kluke from St. John Bosco dominated the 800 metre race and Killaloe Public School won the relay race.
It was Jessie Lea again that stole the show and came out on top in the midget girls running long jump. Megan Henry from Sherwood Public School won the triple jump, and Sydney Aide from George Vanier won the shoot-out. Camille McLean from Killaloe Public School dominated in the shot putt. In the overall medal standings, Rachel Recoskie from KPS placed gold, Jessie Lea took silver, Bailey Hennessy from KPS got bronze and Alyssa Kluke came in fourth.
Turning to midget boys, Nathan Prince from St. Casimir’s won the 100 metre race and the 400 metre race, and Brandon Holly from St. Andrew’s topped the 200 metre and 800 metre dash. It was the team from Palmer Rapids Public School that won the relay race.
Palmer Rapids’ Owen Brodofske got first place in the running long jump as well as the triple jump. Tyler Golka from St. John Bosco won the shoot-out and Brody Verch from St. Andrews dominated in the shot putt. In the overall medal standings, Owen Brodofske took home gold, Brandon Holly got silver, Brendan Cybulski of St. Casimir’s received bronze and Braedon Welk of KPS came in fourth.
In the bantam girls division, Logan Schutt from Palmer Rapids won the 100 metre and 200 metre races. Kristen Ziebarth from George Vanier Catholic School topped the 400 metre dash and Susanna Ridout from Palmer Rapids won the 800 metre race. Again, it was the team from Palmer Rapids Public School that took home top nods for the relay team.
