KILLALOE – People are driving across the old railway bridge, now the covered bridge, in Killaloe at Station Park.
Coun. Ted Browne said he received a complaint directly, about someone driving across the bridge the previous Saturday afternoon which caused some people walking to have to move out of the way. The bridge is not intended for vehicle traffic and Browne claimed the bridge is not tested for safety and ability to support vehicles.
“It was right when the (farmers) market was shutting down,” he said and didn’t know if it might have been a market vendor. He wants to put bollards at each end of the bridge to prevent people from driving across.
Operations Manager Dean Holly said, he believed, the bridge was county property.
“I think we’re gonna have to take it upon ourselves to,” do something about the problem. Holly suggested permanent bollards might block snowmobile traffic in winter and suggested his staff could investigate the cost of something removable and speak with Renfrew County representatives about jurisdiction.
“I wasn’t there,” Browne said, “but the car came right across the bridge and the people actually had to move out of the way. They shouldn’t be driving across there, period.”
