LAS VEGAS – “Mom, no matter what you see on TV, we are safe – Mary and I are safe.”
Rebecca Robertson (nee Casey) never thought she would have to send a text like that, especially during her sixth trip to Las Vegas.
But when a lone gunman opened fire on a large crowd of concertgoers only four blocks away from where Robertson was playing bingo on October 1, Robertson knew her family in Barry’s Bay would be frantic.
Little did she know that the incident – which left 59 people dead and almost 500 injured – would be considered the deadliest mass shooting committed by an individual in modern day U.S. history. According to reports, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock of Mesquite, Nevada, fired thousands of rifle rounds from his suite on the 32nd floor of the Mandala Bay hotel before turning the gun on himself. The victims he gunned down were attending a Jason Aldean concert at the Route 91 Harvest music festival.
“We were in that spot that evening before,” Robertson said. “This man was up in that room just waiting for the right moment to do what he had planned.”
