Barry’s Bay legion hosts veteran’s dinner

BARRY’S BAY – The Barry’s Bay Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 406, hosted a veteran’s dinner on June 12.

In attendance included 28 veterans, 18 spouses/caregivers, four widowers, Mayor Kim Love, 16 CF members of 2nd Battalion from Petawawa and 24 friends and family members.

Veteran Tom Bryce was master of ceremonies.

President and veteran G.G. Mills welcomed the veterans, Mayor Love and guests. He was followed by Mayor Love, who provided a brief history of her connection to the veterans through her grandfather who served in the military.

John Stecko, an RCMP veteran, read out the names and identified the World War II veterans attending and those currently residing at home or in the Valley Manor or Water Tower Lodge.

Dave Eagles a veteran, read and identified the current veterans. John Stecko also identified and read the names of the widows attending the dinner. Veteran Michael Conway spoke about his experiences with the RCAF and changes in the military.  

Veteran John Ogelsby on behalf of the veterans thanked the Legion and the organizing committee for the dinner, which consisted of pork-loin roast and all the fixings. The veterans enjoyed the opportunity to renew acquaintances and reminisce.
