WOLF RIDGE – Almost 200 people played through the day on September 14 in one of the largest annual golf tournaments in the region. The Homestead at Wolf Ridge golf course was full to bursting as locals attended the Joe Murray Memorial golf tournament in support of local organizations. Thirty-seven years ago the tournament, then known as the Killaloe Open, began at the Renfrew course organized by Brian McCarthy, Joe Murray and Phil Skebo. “We started off just to get a golf tournament for the locals,” McCarthy said.” The first year they had 28 players. “Now we cut it off at 195,” McCarthy added. “We just can’t take any more. Joe passed away in 2010, so we renamed it the ‘Joe Murray Memorial’” The tournament is more a homecoming than the golf tournament. “It’s not really about the golf, it’s about everybody getting together, seeing other,” McCarthy said. “People from Toronto, people from Ottawa, from Eganville, from Wilno, from Barry’s Bay. It’s just a real homecoming.” In addition to seeing old friends, the tournament also raises money for local causes. “Every year, we raise money for charity.
