BARRY’S BAY – Three community groups that run out of the Combermere Community Centre presented at the February 15 recreation, heritage and culture committee meeting.
They were there to give updates on their respective groups, and update committee on plans for 2017.
First up was Iwona Mooney from the Madawaska Valley Friendship Club (formerly known as the Golden Age Seniors Club.)
She announced that the club would be making an in-kind donation, in the value of $150, of a fridge and stove that was located in the old premises. It will be installed in the outdoor rink shack at the Combermere centre.
“The township can move these items any time they can get in there,” Mooney said.
The club started in 1975 as the Golden Age Seniors Club and rebranded to the Madawaska Valley Friendship Club in 2015. In September 2016, the club moved from the old activity centre and across the road to the community centre.
There are around 100 members in the club, Mooney explained, and there are several groups under the club’s umbrella. They include a bridge club, a book club and two weight loss groups. Each member pays an annual fee of $15 per year. There are four meetings per year and a quilting and craft group meets every Wednesday.
“What we make is placed into the Combermere craft cabin to be sold,” Mooney said. “Our club helps donate to various local organizations through the profits made at the cabin. Any remaining profits are returned to the club.”
