Young skiers begin lessons at Opeongo Hills

BRUDENELL – Budding young Nordic skiers began their training at the Opeongo Hills Nordic Ski Club on January 21.

Three instructors helped administer the very first lesson out of the six-week program, which runs every Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.

Instructor Trevor McGarry confirmed that 14 kids signed up for the first lesson of the year. The program teaches children the basics of Nordic skiing. All of the lessons are game-based, and McGarry hopes that if the kids take away anything from the program, it is this:

“How to have fun on skis,” he said. “It’s not so much about the skiing as it is about having a good time. The programs are usually geared towards enjoying being on skis – to hook them for life.”

Children between the ages of five and 12 come from Barry’s Bay, Quadeville, Rockingham and Killaloe to enjoy the sport. News of the lessons spread through social media, or through word-of-mouth.

“A lot of families know us, or have talked about the program,” McGarry said.

The program costs $105 for the six-week program, and an additional fee for ski rentals. The lessons include a brief snack, which is included with the rate. Instructor Natalie Robinson confirmed that families could get Jumpstart funding to take part.
