ALGONQUIN PARK – Environment Canada is confirming that a microburst caused the damage to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s hangar on Smoke Lake.
The hangar, which dates back to 1939, was damaged at around 2 p.m. on August 18 after severe weather ripped through the park. There was damage to the roof of the building and the large front doors. According to the Friends of Algonquin Park, a minor injury was reported from this incident, although further information was not available as of press time.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry float plane, stationed in Algonquin Park, escaped damage from the storm. The aircraft was on assignment in another area of the park at the time.
Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Geoff Coulson said based on the information, it appears the damage was the result of a microburst and not a tornado.
