NAW Fire Department hosts annual fishing derby

LAKE DORE – Hundreds of eager fishers made their way out onto frozen Lake Dore on February 14 to participate in the annual North Algona/Wilberforce Fire Department Family Fishing Derby.

Over 300 fishers braved the day’s chilly weather and set up on the frozen lake, while the North Algona/Wilberforce Fire Department kept things warm in a tent on the shoreline. This was the 11th annual fishing derby for the department.

Though the event is nominally a fundraiser for the fire department, there’s another motive behind it all, according to Fire Captain Mark Clarke.

“It’s to promote getting the kids out,” explained Clarke. “We’ve got almost 70 kids registered today.”

Part of the NAW Fire Department’s goal is to get the whole family outside during the winter months to enjoy a bit of seasonal recreation, and promote family and fishing.
