The awe and wonder of Santa Claus

BARRY’S BAY – There was wonder and awe in the eyes of children as they waited in anticipation of Santa Claus’ arrival on Saturday.
The 49th Annual Madawaska Valley Lions Santa Claus Parade kicked off at noon on November 22, with this year’s theme being A Musical Christmas.
Crowds of people young and young-at-heart gathered on both sides of Opeongo Line to enjoy the parade, with 21 floats taking part this year.
Some new entries this year were Tim Hortons, the Renfrew Highlands Pipe Band, the Ottawa Valley Shrine Club and MyFM.
Lion Terry Newcombe, dressed in a lion costume, handed out balloons to the kids along the route, while Canada Post collected letters to Santa.
Numerous candies were thrown to the kids from many of the floats, including candy canes, while others were handed to them by Mayor David Shulist and John Yakabuski, MPP for Renfew-Nippising-Pembroke.
Children eyes lit up with wonder as they eventually got a peek of Santa in his sleigh, as he ho-ho-hoed and jingled some sleigh bells.
After the parade ended, most people made their way to the Paul J. Yakabuski Community Centre (PJYCC), where kids had the chance to sit on Santa’s knee and tell him what they want for Christmas this year.
Musical entertainment at PJYCC was provided by the Joyful Noise Community Singers, and face painting and balloons were available, as well as a free hotdog and drink for the kids.
