Barry’s Bay to host Hockey Day in Canada coverage

BARRY’S BAY – The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has announced Barry’s Bay will be one of four communities hosting coast-to-coast coverage for Hockey Day in Canada.
It was formally announced at the December 10 heritage, parks and recreation community by Paul Nopper, recreation and development community coordinator.
Lloydminster, on the border of Alberta and Saskatchewan, will play the main host community. Prince George in British Columbia, Sydney in Nova Scotia and Barry’s Bay were chosen for coast-to-coast coverage.
The day consists of 13 straight hours of coverage with many NHL games being played in-between.
While the official itinerary has yet to be released, Barry’s Bay could see NHL alumni and/or Team Canada Staff putting on hockey clinics for the day at the Paul J. Yakabuski Community Centre.
Nopper said the Barry’s Bay and Area Minor Hockey Association should be credited for bringing the event to Barry’s Bay. It has been two years in the making, he said.
“This day provides our community with a great opportunity to celebrate hockey in our area and show the nation what hockey means to our communities,” Nopper explained.
Hockey Day in Canada is slated for January 18, 2014.
