KILLALOE – Mayor Janice Visneskie proficiently led the Killaloe-Hagarty-Richards (KHR) township council through the evening’s agenda, resulting in a productive meeting on March 19. The following reflects highlights of that regularly scheduled council meeting.
Delegations
Linda Archibald, coordinator of the Ottawa Valley Creative Arts Open Studio, presented a request for $1,304 for a series of theatre workshops for 10 youth, ages 11-17, to be held in Killaloe in April/May, culminating in a performance mid-June. The effort would teach script development, prop design and construction, rehearsal and performance. Council deferred decision to its upcoming budget meeting.
Volunteer Coordinator Report
Volunteer Coordinator Maria Mayville reported a successful March Break program, with over 70 students participating. A group of cold but cheery councillors and volunteers represented KHR at the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Douglas. Plans for the Irish Gathering 2013 are coming along well. Council approved funds of $290 for refreshments, promotional magnets and seeds, and a banner for the upcoming volunteer appreciation open house event in April.
Works Report
Works Superintendent, Clifford Yantha reported that a number of frozen culverts had required attention this season, as well as a few wash-outs on township roads. Completion of renovations/alterations to the Killaloe waste site, including drive-on deck and railings, will be completed this week. Hopefully all renovations and subsequent attention to the waste site will be completed before the upcoming visit of the Ontario Minister of the Environment, on a date yet to be determined. The council will embark upon their annual road tour on May 7.
Fire Department
Deputy Fire Chief, Gerry Dombroskie reported that activity on the firefighting front in the township were relatively quiet since the last reporting, with only a few minor calls. Training continues to be an ongoing priority with a variety of workshops and events scheduled for the spring. Recently 17 firefighters completed heavy extrication training. Dombroskie reminded council that the fire hall heating system needs replacing. Further investigation leading to a recommendation is ongoing.
