CONWAY, Mercedes (Harrington)
September 24, 1918 – January 14, 2017 - A Funeral Mass celebrating her life will take place on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 2:00 pm at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church. Surrounded by her family, Mercedes Conway passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 14, 2017 in Orleans. Mom was a role model for all of us in the way she lived her life, which was enriched and sustained by faith, family and friends. During her life, Mom encompassed many roles. She was a devoted daughter who very much enjoyed her childhood growing up in Killaloe; a supportive sister who cared deeply for her brother and sisters; a wonderful teacher who taught in one room schools in rural Ontario and was one of the first teachers at St. John Bosco in Barry’s Bay. She married Leo Conway on July 26, 1949 and for the next fifteen years she was a loving wife and partner. Mom was unwavering in her love for us and was most proud of her role in building a close knit family that enjoys spending time together; a proud grandmother and great-grandmother who took great pleasure in being part of their lives. Mom had a positive outlook on life and a pioneering spirit. She enjoyed life’s simple pleasures: gardening, picking berries, going on long walks, reading, trips with her family, baking and playing cards. She was generous and considerate; a proud and active member of the CWL; a volunteer at the Valley Manor and a strong supporter of many charities. Mom was a life-long learner who embraced change and technology, especially enjoying her iPad which gave her the opportunity to stay in touch with family and friends, celebrate daily Mass and pray the rosary. Mom was born on September 24, 1918, the daughter of Dennis Harrington and Catherine Welsh. She had nine siblings: Basil (Aileen), Sister Leona (Mabel); Sister Bernadette (Margaret); Mary (Michael); Grace (Edgar); Cecilia (Martin); Frances, Loretta (Ray) and Bernadette (George). She was the mother of Anne, Marie (Dennis), Tim (Lynda), Patricia (Dan), Dennis (Maureen), Ellen (David) and grandmother of Laurie, Mark, Lucas (Melissa), Samantha (Sean), Sarah (Jacob), Michael (Lauryn), Erin (Chris), Jeff (Sarah), Jenn (Kris), Kate, Emily, Hayleigh, Jillian, Russell, Kevin, Dana and great-grandmother of Benjamin, Jacob, Nathan, Alex, Mercedes (Sadie), Damian, Owen, Isaac, Dominick, Bryson, Blake, Brantley, Logan, Carter, Chase and Henry. Thank you to all those who enriched Mom’s life with their friendship, love and support, through visits, phone calls and Facetime, in particular: Len, Maureen and Kris Conway, Father Terry Conway, Barb Conway, Michael Yakabuskie, Ambrose and Margaret Grand, Brenda TerMarsch, Ray Conlogue. Thank you to Dr. Joe Cybulski and Dr. Jennifer Yau who provided Mom with wonderful care. She was most grateful for their expertise and compassion, particularly during the last years of her life. We will miss your laughter, your stories and your zest for life. May God hold you in the palm of his hand and may heaven be filled with daisies! Donations in Mom’s name can be made to St. Francis Valley Healthcare Foundation.
