Fatal fire on Mask Road

KILLALOE – Patchy rain did little to contain a fatal garage fire on November 7 on Mask Road, at the home of Bonnie Ivimey, Township of Killaloe, Hagarty and Richards community development coordinator. Emergencies services were called to the fire after 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Killaloe, Hagarty and Richards Fire Chief Bob Gareau said neighbouring North Algona Township Fire Department responded immediately to a call for mutual aid. Gareau said the garage was down by the time the firefighters arrived on the scene. The nearby summer kitchen was on fire and spreading to the house, which was a wood frame and tar shingles construction. Strong winds fanned the fire through the residence. Patchy rain came on just after 11 a.m.. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) located the remains of a body at the scene which have yet to be identified, though it is believed to be that of Ivimey’s husband of 43 years. The Ontario Fire Marshals Office, the Office of the Coroner, the OPP Forensic Identification Services Unit and the Renfrew County Crime Unit are continuing the investigation. A portion of Mask Road, from Highway 60 to Round Lake Road, was closed during the investigation. Investigations continue into the cause of the fire. Anyone with information surrounding this fire is asked to contact the Killaloe OPP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. To read the full story, pick up a copy of the November 14, 2018 Valley Gazette.
